Fermi Linux v6.1.2a 3/20/2001 Connie Sieh Fermi Linux 6.1.2a is based on RedHat 6.1 . All of the RedHat errata(patches) as of 3/20/2001 have already been applied. We have added a few packages(rpms) ourselves. These are documented in /Fermi/doc/html/611/rpm2html/Fermi_Red_Hat_v6.1.1.html. Documentation ------------- See /Fermi.documentation/ for Fermi.CHANGELOG detail changes Fermi.releasenotes. Release notes for each of the beta and RC releases cdromfermioffsiteissues.txt A document describing issues for offsite installations. UPS/UPD Bootstrap ------------------ UPS version Does not check for disk space Installs via cdrom when the network is disconnected UPS/UPD is supported via the CSI group in the OSS Department Contact them via the helpdesk at helpdesk@fnal.gov or csi-group@fnal.gov Packages -------- addserial 1.0-2 Fixes order in which /etc/lilo.conf serial console line is defined. Ensures that /dev/console has correct major and minor number kernel kernel 2.2.17-14 vs 2.2.12-20 2.2.17-14 is from RedHat errata -- Security fixes No Fermi changes Prior Fermi changes from 2.2.14-3f2 were already in this new kernel SECURITY -------- If the directory /DONOTEXPORT exists on this cdrom then it may NOT be exported out of the UNITED STATES. See the README in DONOTEXPORT for more information. This is because ssh and other programs which are export controlled are contained in the DONOTEXPORT directory. If the DONOTEXPORT directory does exist then ssh and the other export controlled programs will not be installed during the install unless you have a Fermi ip address and you are on the network. SSH is installed via ftp from a Fermi system during the install. This ftp area is limited to fnal.gov addresses. SSH is available from replay.com in /pub/crypto/linux/redhat/i386 if needed. This release assumes installation at Fermilab. Thus one might want to check the contents of /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny and change if necessary for access from sites other than .fnal.gov. GENERAL INSTALL --------------- The install floppy has only been changed to make "text" install be the default. This is the only way that the workgroup installs will work. CDROM INSTALL ------------- If you install this cdrom on a system that is not connected to the internet then the last step will take a very very very long time. This is because the install is timing out looking up DNS and this timeout is slow. To install via the cdrom you can just boot off the cdrom if your bios supports that feature. If not, you can make a cdrom install floppy from /images/boot.img.fermi or /images/bootnet.img.fermi for a network install floppy. For info on how to make a floppy see /doc/rhmanual/manual/doc091.htm. Also, see /README which is the standard RedHat readme. CHANGES ------- /images/boot.img.fermi /images/bootnet.img Install floppy image versions based on 5.2, but needed for this CD to work. /RedHat/RPMS/zz* RPMS that we have created for security and other bug fixes. /Fermi/RPMS Fermi RPMS that may be needed but cannot live in /RedHat/RPMS. /Fermi/workgroups One directory for each of the following workgroups Astro ConsoleServer FermiStandAlone RIP CDF D0desktop ODS SDSS CDFonline FOCUS OSS Theory CDFoffsite Farms PAT D0offsite CMSdesktop /contrib This area contains items that do not fall under a standard Fermi Linux v6.1.2a installation but are useful to have. /tomsrtbt/tomsrtbt-1.7.185 A really good recovery/rescue disk. http://www.toms.net/rb /RPMS/ mswordview-0.5.14-bw6.i386.rpm sudo-1.6.2p1-1rh61.i386.rpm /pcmcia/ pcmcia-cs-3.1.11.tar.gz /pcp/ Sgi's Performance Co-Pilot product /books/ /suse64/book-en.pdf The Suse 6.4 Install Manual --- Some very good generic Linux sections. /linuxadmin/lame.pdf A book called "Linux Administration Made Easy" /security/ /Securing-Optimizing-Linux-RH-Edition-1_3.pdf A RedHat Linux Security Book /Securing-Optimizing-Linux-RH-Edition-1_3.floppy.tgz A floppy that contains items from the above book /RedHat/RPMS/howto- These howto rpms were deleted because of a shortage of cdrom space.
